The Rev. Dr. Jerald W. Hyche
Rector
The Rev. Dr. Jerald W. Hyche was called as Rector of St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church in 2010. A native of Alabama, Jerald has been an Episcopalian since age 11. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Alabama with a major in Communications. Before entering the ordained ministry, he worked as a journalist at newspapers across the South. Jerald continues to write and is a regular contributor to a variety of religious and other publications in the Diocese of Texas and nationally. He has worked as a reporter during two Episcopal General Conventions. Jerald says both vocations — journalism and the priesthood — are similar because they each are founded in a search for the truth and fairness for all.
Jerald defines the Christian life as relationship with God lived out with neighbor, a perspective that attracted him to focus on urban development and family issues as a reporter and one that continues to shape his calling as a priest.
After graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2004, he served as curate at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope, Alabama. From 2006 to 2010, he served as associate rector at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, where his work focused on family ministries, discipleship, outreach and spiritual formation. Jerald received his Doctor of Ministry in 2022 from Virginia Theological Seminary.
Jerald and his wife, Colleen, live with their Great Pyrenees, Bentley. They have three adult daughters: Melanie, Suzannah and Caroline.
